The annual throw-down between the Tigers and their cross-town rivals, the Lee's Summit North Broncos, did not disappoint anyone, again this year. Unless, that is, you are a Tiger fan! For the second time in the Broncos' school history they defeated the Tigers - both times at home. The last time was a 34-30 thriller in 2008. This one had all of the same excitement and fans on their feet, yelling, as any previous match-up has had. And, it included a larger crowd with folks on hand to support the Bronco Seniors and their parents, and local media in attendance to record the proceedings.

Action started at 126 pounds with a quick pin by Bronco Ian Lindsey. Three of the same Bronco seniors who'd just been introduced to the crowd then took over, first was a fall by Will Thomas (132#), then Chad Homan's (138#) decision, and a hard-fought upset decision by Gunnar Duckworth. The Tigers found themselves in a deep hole, trailing 0-18

Tiger Senior Josh Aguilar (152#) finally was able to put some points on the Tiger's side of the scoreboard with his 7-4 win. The Tigers dropped the 160# match by decision before Tiger Sophomore 170# Zach Lindsey added six with his pin in :23 in the first period. The Broncos kept up their high pace with another fall at 182#, making the team score Tigers 9, Broncos 27.

It was the Tigers turn to swing the momentum back to themselves, which they did by rattling off four straight wins, two by fall. Senior 195# Cullen Duke won a commanding decision 16-5. Junior 220# Theo Propst pinned his opponent in 5:38, followed by Junior 285# Logan Drake's fall in 2:27 - and all of a sudden the Tigers only trailed 25-27. Switch to the light weights for the finish. Freshman 106# Trey Broker fought a back and forth match, putting his opponent's shoulders to the mat several times, teasing the crowd with the thought of a fall and the lead. In the end, he won by decision and gave the Tiger fans what they had been screaming for - a 28-27 lead.

Two matches left and the Tigers nursing a one-point lead. Regular 113#er Cartland Allen was scratched from the dual, forcing Freshman Austin Jones to the mat in his place. Jones came out tough and determined, but ultimately suffered a pin, giving the lead back to the Broncos, by five points. The Tigers' last hopes fell onto the shoulders of Sophomore 120# Alan Olivas. Olivas battled his opponent for the entire match before finally succumbing to a fall.  results / photos

The Tigers brought 6 medals home from their annual trip to the Columbia Hickman Invitational this past weekend. That's quite a haul considering they only entered 11 into the competition and that one had to withdraw because of injury after barely being able to complete his first match. The Tigers were already shorthanded by 2 because of injury and finished in sixth place in the team standings.

Leading the effort were Seniors Alex Swartz (152#) and Cullen Duke (195#) and junior Logan Drake (220#) - each placing second. Third-place finishers were Freshman Trey Broker (106#), and Senior Josh Aguilar (145#). Rounding out the medal winners was fourth-place finisher Senior Jess Morris (138#). Morris was competing for the first time since an early season injury.

Other placers for the Tigers who did not receive medals were Junior Andrew Smith (132#), who finished 6th and Sophomore Isaiah Mayfield (182#), seventh place. results / photos

After handing a forfeit to the Jays, 120# sophomore Alan Olivas was next, pumping the fans back up with a first-period fall and handing the team score lead back to the Tigers. It would be the last time the Tigers held the lead tho. Three straight pins by the Jays put them up 6 - 27. Seniors Alex Swartz (145#) and Josh Aguilar (152#) both won by decision. The last two wins by Tiger wrestlers were Isaiah Mayfield at 182# and Senior Cullen Duke at 195. Both won by fall. Final, Tigers 24, Jays 45.

Tigers Medal Five at Leavenworth

Only Top 2 Placers Recognized at Tourney

The Tigers officially placed five wrestlers at the Leavenworth Challenger Tourney last weekend. Because of how the tournament is administered, the 12 wrestlers in each weight are split into an "A" pool of more experienced, accomplished wrestlers, and a "B" pool consisting of wrestlers deemed to have less experience in comparison to the rest of their weight, only the top two in each pool are officially recognized. There were no team points kept.

That formula didn't keep the Tigers from wrestling hard tho! Sophomore Cartland Allen pinned his way thru all of his opponents and took first in the "A" pool. Cartland's brother Coulter placed second in the 138# "A" pool, losing only to a two-time state medalist. Also placing second was Senior Alex Swartz at 152# "A" pool. His only loss was to a state medalist. 160# Senior Josh Aguilar and 285# Junior Logan Drake both placed third in their "A" pools.

"B" pool placers were Trey Broker, 106# Freshman, and 126# Sophomore Alan Olivas

Tigers Fall to Nationally Ranked Kearney

Tigers 21 - Bulldogs 47

The Tigers traveled to Kearney for their first away competition, coming up short in a hard-fought match-up with the Bulldogs - currently ranked 29th in the nation by Intermat. The dual was book-ended with a pair of Tiger pins and the matches in between were peppered with strong efforts by the Tigers despite a Bulldog lineup that placed 4th in state last season in class 3, and returns two 100+ career match winners including 1 state champion, three second-placers and two bronze medalists.

Sophomore 113# Cartland Allen is shown here pinning his opponent. It was Cartland's third straight stick in as many matches this year and began the night on a good note for the Tigers.

Grapplers Open With A Pair

The Lee's Summit Tiger Wrestlers broke in a new coach and a new mat with dual victories in their season-opening competition at the Fieldhouse on Tuesday evening.

Head Coach Jay McGovern earned wins in his first two duals as the Tigers' Head Coach in front of a large home crowd in attendance for a triple-dual night of wrestling.

In the first event the two visiting teams, Liberty North and Belton competed. Then it was the Tigers turn to take the mat.

Tigers 58 - Eagles 24

First up for the Tigers was Liberty North. Senior Josh Aguilar, 160#, set the pace with a 45-second fall. The Tigers gave up their first of three forfeits at 170# and a fall at 182# to fall behind 12-6. 195# Senior Cullen Duke fought hard for a 9-6 victory and 220# Junior Theo Propst accepted the Eagles only forfeit, putting the Tigers back into the lead for good at 15-12. Junior 285# Logan Drake stuck his opponent, followed by Freshman 106# Trey Brokers' stick in his first match as a Tiger, and Sophomore Cartland Allen's fall at 113# to make the lead 36-12.

Senior Alex Swartz, 152#, spent parts of his total 2:11of mat-time in two matches all over the mat, but mostly with his opponents on their backs as he won both by fall! He was one of four Tiger Wrestlers who pinned both of their opponents.

The Tigers handed over forfeits at 120# and 126# allowing the Eagles to double their point total, but that would be the end of their scoring.

The Tigers ended the action with four consecutive falls. Junior Andrew Smith at 132# got his at 1:36, Junior Coulter Allen, 138#, followed with his at 3:47. Then the other two Seniors on the squad both tacked on first-period falls. Jesse Morris at 145# in 1:01 and Alex Swartz at 152# in 0:45.

Tigers 37 - Pirates 36

The Tigers second opponent of the night proved to be a lot more stingy with their points.

Sophomore Josh Aguilar, 145#, throws his Staley opponent on his way to a 5-0 record.
Senior Josh Aguilar, 160#, went 2-0, including a decision in the final match-up of the night against Belton which won the dual for his team.

Competition started at 170# and Lee's Summit's spotted the Pirates six right away. The Tigers first points were on Duke's 1:04 fall, closing the team scores gap to 6-12. Drake was the next winner with his fall in 2:36, but the Tigers were still behind 12-15. Cartland Allen scored the next team points with his fall at 2:09 but the Tigers struggled to gain the lead and still trailed 18-21. They immediately handed over 15 more points via forfeits at 120# and 126# and a 132# loss, and fell behind 18-36. The Tigers would have to double their score in the remaining four matches just to tie the Pirates.

So, it was off to the bonus team points machine for those four grapplers. First up was Coulter Allen's stick at 138#, then Morris' 13-3 major at 145#, then Swartz's fall in 1:36 at 152# and the Tigers found themselves within two points at 34-36 - a decision in the final match would give the Tigers the win.

It was up to Tiger Senior Josh Aguilar at 160#. He battled hard with his opponent and methodically worked the match thru six minutes, allowing only a takedown while scoring five, securing his individual win and the team's dual win.

Of the 11 contested matches, the Tigers scored 16 bonus points on 5 falls and a major, while giving up 6 - 15 total "extra" points when counting the three forfeits. The Tigers had to overcome 24 total points they handed over to the Pirates in bonus and forfeits to come away with the team win. Whether preventing an opponent from earning a major decision or not pressing six full minutes to earn the technical fall, up and down the lineup, it proves yet again that each individual wrestler's bonus points, whether earned or allowed, win team duals and tournaments.

Head Wrestling Coach Jay McGovern

"Gov" Takes Over Program

Jay McGovern Becomes 6th LSHS Head Wrestling Coach
Jay McGovern Becomes 6th LSHS Head Wrestling Coach

Jay McGovern was promoted to the Lee's Summit High School Tiger Wrestling Head Coaching position earlier this year, only the sixth to hold the title since the program began 47 years ago. Jay served as an assistant coach last season. This is Jay's second stint as a head wrestling coach, having lead the Ruskin program for two years. Jay brings years of coaching experience at the prep level with him, including two years assisting at Lee's Summit West, six years as assistant previously at LSHS, and two years assisting at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, High School. Jay also spent 4 years as an assistant at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

Coach McGovern is looking forward to working with a squad that is returning five state qualifiers from last season and putting the wear down on a brand spanking new, state-of-the-art practice facility, and a promising group of freshman grapplers. Jay got things under way over the summer with a clinic held in the new wrestling room which featured his younger brother, Jon, the head wrestling coach at Dubuque University in Dubuque, Iowa, and a summer training camp trip to Wisconsin.

Give Coach McGovern a welcome and stay tuned to this sight as we follow our wrestling program into a new era.
