Six Tigers earned state tournament berths during Super-Districts on Saturday. 119# Junior Spencer Courier makes his third trip to the big dance. 160# Junior Andrew Lattner will be making his second trip. 103# Freshman Jesse Morris, 130# Junior John Williams, 171# Junior Josh Howard and 215# Junior Dylan Case will all be making their first trip. Every one of these wrestlers qualified by finishing third in their respective weight class. The Tigers finished in third place, 5.5 points behind second and a plaque. It was the Tigers highest Districts finish since finishing third in 2003 and 2004.
After the quarter-final round, the team was in second place. However, the Tigers fell way behind the team leaders after their semi-final round early Saturday - no wrestler won their semi-final bout during that round and the team dropped to below 7th place. However, with a strong will and determination, each semi-finalist, save one, won their next match and advanced on the back side of the brackets. 145# Junior Justin Bruce lost a heart-breaking match in which he grabbed the lead late in the third period with a takedown, only to surrender a last-second escape to his opponent. That loss kept him from qualifying for state. 152# Senior Corey Lockwood lost his state bid in a close match that saw him ahead midway thru, when his opponent gained the lead in the last period and got the win. Williamshad the toughest job on the day, having to defeat 3 wrestlers on the back-side of his brackets to get to thrid place. He did it in fashion tho, with two falls and a major - and then took third with a major.
The Tigers came on strong during the finals round. Finding themselves several points behind third place Lee's Summit West, they manned up with 2 major victories, a tech-fall and a pin. Case pinned his LS West foe and Howard decisoned his LS West opponent to the Tigers' 3rd place bid.
The 2009 Missouri State Championships get underway this Thursday, Feb. 19. and continue until Saturday, Feb. 21. The Tigers first action there will be on Thursday at 5:00pm.

Tiger Seniors Bookend Chrisman Dual Win 44-33

On Senior Night at LSHS, Tiger Senior wrestlers Andrew Lattner and Corey Lockwood supplied the fist and last wins of the night. Andrew started the dual by accepting a forfeit at 160 lbs. and Corey ended the night with a 18-2 tech-fall of his William Chrisman opponent. Between those two matches was a lot of tense moments and see-saw scoring!
171 pounder Josh Howard suffered a hard-fought loss to a district foe, Steven Kingsolver lost by fall, and the Tigers found themselves behind 6-9. 215 pound, 6th ranked, Dylan Case gave LS the lead back with his own pin, then Sean Williams suffered a fall and the Tigers were trailing 12-15. The Tigers were open at 103 and 112, giving the Bears a 12-27 lead. 119 pounder Spencer Courier won by fall, followed by Nick Mahon's battle. Nick traded leads with his opponent for 5 and a half minutes, before ultimately taking command of his match and securing a 15-13 win. Then 130 pounder Jon Williams got pinned, extending the Bears' lead to 21-33. The Tigers trailed by 12 with only three scheduled matches left.

135 pounder Alex Swartz, in what has lately become routine for him, stuck his opponent in the second minute of the first period, cutting the Bears lead to 3. With the crowd expecting a forfeit by Chrisman at 140#, Bears' coach Mick Cronk (1996 state champion at 145#, a member of the 1996 LS State Championship Team and the only LSHS wrestler to ever medal 4 times) brought out his JV wrestler to face Josh Aguilar. Josh fought hard with him until finally sticking him in the final seconds of the second period and tieing the Bears 33-33. 145 pounder Justin Bruce took a forfeit, setting the stage for the 152 pounder Lockwood's win by tech-fall, and the dual win.

The Tigers will remain in the practice room until next weeks' Super-Districts at Ray-Pec which get underway at 5:00pm Friday, Feb. 13 and continue at 10:00am on Saturday. The top 4 finishers at each weight will advance to the Missouri State Championships, held at the University of Missouri at Columbia's Mizzou Arena Thursday, Feb. 19 through Saturday, Feb., 21.

#10 Tigers Stop #9 Liberty 31-29

The Tigers etched a conference victory over Liberty 31-29 on the strength of 3 wins with bonus points, scoring 7 extra team points via 2 falls and a major. They split total wins with Liberty, each having 7, including one forfeit each. However, the team gave up only 5 extra team points. The Tigers were ranked 10th in state to Liberty's 9th ranking. Liberty got on the board first with a major over Justin Bruce, 145#. The Tigers rattled off 3 straight wins - Corey Lockwood got a free pass at 152#, Andrew Lattner by fall at 160# and Josh Howard by decision at 171#. The teams traded wins over the next 5 matches with the Tigers' Dylan Case getting a decision at 215# and, in the match of the night, Jesse Morris winning 12-11 at 103#. Jesse battled his opponent the entire match and in a flurry of action during the last period that saw the lead change 5 times before Jesse finally got the last 2 points of the match in the final seconds to secure the win. That made the team score after the first 8 matches Tigers 22, Liberty 13.The last 6 matches proved even more exciting. With the Tigers open at 112#, Liberty moved ahead 25-22 after winning decisions at 119# and 125#. The Tigers' John Williams put 4 points on the Tigers' side of the board with his major decision at 130#. He was followed by Freshman Alex Swartz's fall at 135#, which put the Tigers ahead 32-25 with one match left to wrestle. However, the scoreboard read 31-25 and allowed indication of a possible tie. All Josh Aguilar had to do was keep from getting pinned and the Tigers would at least tie the dual. However, as rookie Swartz left the mat, he pulled off one strap of his singlet - an automatic technical foul resulting in a deduction of one team point, making the scoreboard read Tigers 30, Liberty 25. Now Aguilar had to keep from getting teched to preserve the dual win and seemingly a fall would win the dual for Liberty. Josh's opponent knew the team score and worked for the pin and dual win but Josh fought hard, fighting off his back several times until his opponent, giving up on a fall, tried to run up the score, for a tech-fall and a team tie, in the final minute by cutting and taking him down. However, Josh came thru on his task and only lost by a major, giving Liberty 4 points and the Tigers the dual win, 30-29. After reviewing the match results, the correct team score is Tigers 31, Liberty 39.

The Tigers travel to Columbia this weekend for the tough Hickman tourney.

Tigers Down Rival Broncos 47-18

The Tigers defeated their cross-town rival Lee's Summit North Broncos 47-18 on Tuesday night on the strength of 8 bonus team point wins including 5 falls, two tech-falls and a major.
Dylan Case, 215# Junior, began the night by majoring his opponent. Then 275# Junior Sean Williams, looking out-weighted by about 100 pounds, stepped up the momentum by avoiding a late first period takedown attempt and scrambling for his own 2 in the final seconds, then quickly turning and pinning his opponent in the second period. The Broncos got on the board with a fall at 103#. Jesse Morris, 112# Freshman and Spencer Courier, 119# Junior both rattled of 1st period falls, giving the Tigers a 22-6 lead. Then the Broncos made a run of 4 straight wins, closing the gap to 22-18. However the Tigers were ready for a run of their own, winning the last 5 matches of the dual in easy fashion. Justin Bruce, 145# Junior and Chris Lattner, 152# Freshman both won by tech-fall. Then Andrew Lattner, 160# Senior, and Josh Howard, 171# Junior, won by fall. Steven Kingsolver capped off the night with an important decision over his state-ranked opponent.
The Tigers have a week off to fine-tune their technique and prepare for an important dual with conference foe Liberty on Jan. 20 at the Fieldhouse. There will be many important, tight match-ups with a strong Liberty team, including super-district seeding implications. The anticipated battles will provide for an exciting night of watching your Tigers Wrestlers compete on the mat.

The Tigers hosted #1 state-ranked (#14 ranked in the USA) Park Hill, losing the meet 3 - 57. Senior Andrew Lattner, 160#, got the only win for the home team, securing an important in-district 8-3 decision. Junior Dylan Case, #2 ranked at 215#, lost his first match of season, a close, hard-fought competition to the #4 ranked wrestler. Three matches seemingly could have ended up in favor of the Tigers. Freshman Josh Aguilar, 140#, was leading his entire match before allowing his opponent a late 2 points which tied the match and sent it into overtime where Josh gave up a takedown for the loss. Junior Josh Howard, 171#, lead most of his match before his opponent, the #2 ranked wrestler, came back in the 3rd period for a win. Junior Justin Bruce, 145#, fought his #7 ranked opponent hard, losing by only 3 points. Freshman Jesse Morris, 103#, fought extremely hard against his #1 ranked opponent, attacking throughout the match and not conceding anything.
After the Jan. 10 Marquette tournament, the Tigers will take a long break from competition, hunker down in the practice room to concentrate on drilling and improving, before getting back on the mat Jan. 20 to host a strong Liberty team for more in-district matches. With the Tigers having 8 wrestlers currently ranked in the district, to Liberty's 9, there will be many important and exciting matches to see that night.

The squad placed 6th, their highest finish since taking 7th place in 2006 and 2004. Dylan Case captured his second gold medal in as many weeks, going undefeated in 8 matches during the tourney. Dylan is now 18-0 on the season. Senior Andrew Lattner and Junior Spencer Courier placed 4th. Junior Justin Bruce and Freshman Jesse morris placed 5th. Junior Josh Howard and Sophomore Steven Kingsolver place 6th.

The Tigers were open at 119 pounds. The rest of the team combined for a total 55 wins and 29 losses - a .655 winning percentage. Bonus points again played a significant factor in where the team finished. 30 of the Tigers' 55 wins included bonus team points with 5 majors, a tech and 24 falls! That means 55% of the Tigers' contested matches (does not include 13 matches forfeited to them) included bonus team points. With Francis Howell and Troy finishing only 7 points behind them, it's not hard to realize what a huge difference those extra 38.5 points earned on for working extra hard and smart on the mat can make.

Francis Howell Central took the team trophy home and Blackfoot, ID finished 2nd after winning last year, with Liberty taking 3rd and Jefferson City 4th.

Coach Graham introduced a special guest for the finals - World Champion Greco-Roman and Olympic wrestler Spenser Mango.
Tigers take 3rd at Bronco Invitational

Tigers Wrestling placed all 13 wrestlers they brought to the 2008 Lee's Summit North Bronco Invitational on their to way a 3rd place team finish. Junior Dylan Case went undefeated, including 3 falls and a major, on his way to securing first place. Junior Spencer Courier pinned his way to the championship before being defeated and taking 2nd place. Sophomore Steven Kingsolver had 4 pins on his way the championship before bringing home 2nd place. Unseeded Junior Justin Bruce upset seeded and state-ranked wrestlers on his way to a 3rd place finish. Senior Corey Lockwood had 2 falls and 2 tech-falls on his way to 3rd place. Senior Andrew Lattner and Junior Josh Packard finished 4th. Junior Josh Howard and Freshmen Jesse Morris and Josh Aguilar all finished 5th. Sophomore Nick Mahon placed 6th and Freshman Adam Lemmer finished 7th. The story behind their team success, besides the obvious one of placing 13 grapplers, may well be the bonus points scored. By one count, the Tigers scored bonus team points in 66% of their matches, including fofeits. Not including forfeits, that percentage remains over 50%, including 24 falls, 3 tech-falls and 5 majors. Take away those 56.5 bonus points and the Tigers would have just barely placed 3rd by about 5 points, instead of nearly taking second. That's a huge credit to the coaching staff and the aggresssive style of wrestling, hard work and extra conditioning the team has bought in to.

Of the 10 matches contested, Tiger wrestlers won them all. Most importantly, they scored bonus team points in 9 of the matches. Tigers wins included 7 pins, a tech fall and one major. Not only the Tigers as a team, but each individual wrestler has opened the season with a win. Beyond that, 3 freshman - Alex Swartz at 135#, Josh Aguilar at 140# and Jesse Morris at 112# - opened their high school career with not only wins, but with falls. Alex Swartz had the added duty of opening the dual competition on the night. Seniors Corey Lockwood at 152# and Andrew Lattner at #160, Juniors Josh Howard at 171# and Spencer Courier at 125# also recorded pins. The only points put on the board by the Patriots were for the 4 open weights on the Tigers roster.

Preseason Picks

Two Tiger wrestlers have caught the eye of MissouriWrestling.com ranking prognosticators. Senior Andrew Lattner is ranked 6th at 171# and Junior Spencer Courier is ranked 8th at 125# (both are returning state qualifiers). Anyone involved in this sport realizes that rankings are fleet and often not worth the paper they're written on. The Tigers' dedication and success during the off season, as evidenced by the record 7 Fargo Nationals quailifers, and the entire team's committment and work ethic this season will be proven out at state. Look for the rankers to have to shuffle their lists as the season unfolds and more Tigers make a name for themselves. Tom Brands, Iowa Hawkeye head coach, 3-time NCAA champion and Olympic gold medalist, when asked about one of his young wrestlers chances against the #1 ranked wrestler in the nation, was famously quoted, "I've never seen two pieces of paper wrestle, so I guess we'll have to see what happens on the mat." His wrestler proceeded to destory that highly ranked opponent.

3rd Annual Wrestling Club Golf Tournament

On Sunday, October 19th, 2008, 24 of Lee's Summit wrestling's finest golfers descended on Shamrock Hills for the 3rd annual LSKWC wrestling golf outing. Participants included current high school coaches, Don Graham, Rob Courier and Jesse Sheets. Kids club coaches, Corey Hanson, Rick Drake and Tom Sennif. Current LSHS wrestlers Spencer Courier and Alex Swartz and former wrestlers Craig Bears and Brackon Lundy. The weather was perfect. 2 time champ Craig Bears showed up wearing "the belt", determined to keep it. Team Sennif wrested control of the belt shooting an eye popping 8 under in the windy conditions. Prizes were awarded for closest to the pin, longest drive and longest putt. Winners included Jesse Sheets (longest drive) and Rick Drake (longest putt). A putting contest was held with the winner holing a 50' putt good for $50 cash! Proceeds from the event in years past have gone to buy new team singlets. This years proceeds will be applied to buying new mats for the wrestling room and to help cover travel expenses for team trips. Many thanks to our sponsors, participants and to Shamrock Hills for making the event a wonderful experience. We are looking forward to next year and an even better turn out!
